If the skies are clear, then we will be able to see the planet Jupiter, the large galaxy Andromeda, and a myriad of stars and constellations. Coincidentally, the Orionid meteor
shower will peak on the night of the 21st. It is best viewed from darker locations outside the city and later in the night, but lucky visitors to the Observatory Open House might glimps a meteor.

Antihydrogen Trapped
Guest: Dr. Francis Robicheaux, Auburn University, Department of Physics
Thursday, November 17, 2011 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Location: Auditorium, Physics 202Atoms made of a particle and an antiparticle are unstable, usually surviving less than a microsecond. Antihydrogen, the bound state of an antiproton and a positron, is made entirely of antiparticles and is believed to be stable. It is this longevity that holds the promise of precision studies of matter-antimatter symmetry. Low energy (Kelvin scale) antihydrogen has been produced at CERN since 2002. I will describe the experiment which has recently succeeded in trapping antihydrogen in a cryogenic Penning trap for times up to approximately 15 minutes.

Note the switch to a Thursday night. Not only will Jupiter and Andromeda be in the night sky, but again, we have the coincidence of a meteor shower. This time, it is the Leonids, which will peak later in the night/following morning. It is best viewed from darker locations outside the city and later in the night, but lucky visitors to the Observatory Open House might glimps a meteor.
